during the 1983 model year as Toyota belatedly switched its compact car from
rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive. Built in Japan, the Camry model line
consisted of a four-door sedan and a four-door hatchback, which Toyota called

Camry, introduced in 1983, became America’s favorite family sedan and was the
nation’s top-selling automobile in seven of the eight years from 1997 through
2005. Now sold in 27 countries and manufactured in 10, the Camry has had
cumulative sales of over6.5 million units in the United States and over 10
million worldwide.
